The museum is designed with assisted listening devices, wheelchair rentals, a wheelchair-accessible entrance, and a wheelchair-accessible toilet, thus making it easy for physically impaired individuals to access the historical site. Construction of this great jail began in 1821, and it was officially opened in 1829.

The architectural styles used to build the prison were Gothic Revival architecture and Gothic architecture.
