Indianapolis Zoo

Welcome to Indianapolis, the city that was platted by Alexander Ralston and Fordham Elias. The plan from Ralston exceeded the Governor’s Circle, currently called Monument Circle. As of 2019, Indy had an estimated population of 876,384. The early grid done by Alexander can be still identified at the heart of Downtown. Indy spans an area of 367.97 square miles, whereby 6.30 square miles are covered by water, and the remaining 361.66 square miles are land. Indianapolis is served by the 317 and 463 area codes.

Many points of interest exist in Indy, and among these attractive sites is the Indianapolis Zoo. The Indianapolis Zoo is an incredible zoo in Indiana located close to the White River State Park. Its address is 1200 W Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46222, USA. It is usually opened at 9 AM, and its departments include the West Side Café, Indianapolis Zoo Parking Lot, and the West Parking Lot.

The common animals in the zoo include the Akilah, Kalina, Takasa, Anuli, Rubani, and Bree, to mention but a few. Indianapolis Zoo covers 26 hectares and it currently homes 3,800 animals. There are 320 species in the zoo, and as of 2019, they recorded a total number of 1.1 million visitors. The zoo was opened on 18 April 1964.

Indianapolis Zoo

It is an Amazing Institution!

This amazing institution is certified by the Association of Aquariums and Zoos and the American Alliance of Museums. This gives the management full authority to operate as a botanical garden, zoo, and aquarium. However, it could help if you knew that the zoo is also considered a private non-profit organization that does not receive tax support.

Thus, it relies on membership fees, donations, sales, annual fundraisers, and grants. What inspired the construction of this amazing zoo was Lowell Nussbaum’s thoughts, who was a famous newspaper columnist in Indianapolis. Members from the Indianapolis Zoological Society drafted a plan for the zoo and became adamant about the plan. After the plan was verified, the museum was presented to the public in 1964 for the first time. George Washington Park is the eldest part of the zoo, which is located on East 30th Street.

In its initial opening, the zoo attracted over 270,000 visitors, and this was a good start. It initially showcased foxes, Asian elephants, buffalo, llamas, camels, and deer exhibits, to mention but a few. However, by the 20th century, the zoo’s collection had doubled, thus the need for a location for expansion.

The White River State Park

The White River State Park also forms part of this incredible zoo. It covers 64 acres, and it was opened in 1988. The zoo was awarded an AZA license after constructing the Dolphin Pavilion and the Waters building. This allowed the institution to operate as both an aquarium and zoo. It was after this event that the zoo became the first institution in Indianapolis to receive a triple-accreditation.

Indeed, the zoo is just an amazing place to be. They have attractive animals everywhere, not to mention those evergreen plants that originated from different parts of the world. The staff members on-site are incredible people who are ready to help when called upon. It won’t hurt if you spent some time and visited this zoo with your family and friends.
