White River State Park

Indianapolis is the largest city in Indiana, and most of the city’s notable architectural features and the most popular events date back to the earliest 20th century. For example, in this city, you will locate the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument that was dedicated back on May 15, 1902. The symbol later became the city’s unofficial symbol. Indianapolis is located in Marion County, and it was identified as an incorporated city on March 30, 1847. The city’s current mayor is Joe Hogsett, and the city sits on a piece of land measuring 367.97 square miles. The city’s elevation is 718 feet, and it is served by the 317 and 463 area codes.

The White River State Park is considered an urban park located in Downtown Indianapolis. The address to this attractive park is 801 W Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46204, USA. The park usually closes at 11 PM and opens at 5 AM. It could help if you knew that the park is on a piece of land measuring 267 acres. There is an incredible TCU Amphitheatre at the park, which has a carrying capacity of 2,500 people, not to mention the 3,500 admission lawn seats, which makes the total carrying capacity 6,000. So if you are worried about the entrance fee, it would be better if you knew there is no entry fee charged when you visit the White River State Park.

Urban Parks in Indianapolis

Even though the park is among the urban parks in Indianapolis, it is important to note that it is not among the thirty-two properties managed by the Division of State Parks. Instead, this is a land management team that is found in the Department of Natural Resources. The restoration of White River State Park was assumed in the late 1980s when public attention was directed to the Indiana Central Canal. Initially, the canal was engineered by the state of Indiana as it played a significant role in the shipping of goods to the state.

After the project went bankrupt, the canal remained the only section of the entire canal ever dug. Even though the canal was not utilized for the intended purpose, the recent restoration and development have impacted its function greatly as a cultural area in the city. However, a part of the proposed focal region of the park called Indiana Tower was never restored.

Points of Attractions in the Park

There are many points of attractions in the park, and among them is the Victory Field. This place was opened in 1996 to act as home to the Indianapolis Indians. In addition, the Indiana Historical Society was founded in 1830 and 1999; it was opened as a building adjacent to the park. There is also the Medal of Honor Memorial that was opened in 1999, not to forget the Military Park that was the first site of the Indiana State Affair in 1852.

The park also includes the Indiana State Museum that was opened in 2002, and the IMAX 3D Theatre was opened in 1996 as Indiana’s unique IMAX theatre, which is also the largest in the state. The park is indeed a nice place to explore whenever you are in Indiana. So please make an effort to visit the park on your visit to Indy.
