Some Activities done by the Museum

Some activities done by the museum are acquiring notable holdings like the Stevens-Esarey collection of daily tools that were used in the 19th century. Sieber Roy and Rubin Arnold collected other West African materials. There is also the Ellison collection with different Native American materials like the Hendricksville pottery donated by Cecilia Wahl and Henry, among some Pacific artifacts.

Even though some artifacts in the museum were obtained in the early decades, they were also accompanied by critical documentation about their uses and makers. However, some artifacts in the museum do lack contextual information.

After the collections were obtained a few years later, the museum’s staff, university students, and the faculty joined hands to gather information to understand various items donated. It is also important to note that the museum was first announced in 1963. The Indiana University Museum was originally funded by the departments of Anthropology and History in the university, not to forget the Committee on Folklore.
