The ground floor wall to this incredible tavern is designed with a unique design that involves log building with timber framing. The walls are well-framed, and the posts found between the posts are filled with hewn beams. What makes the design more unique is that each beam is connected to its mortise, and the spaces between the beams are closed by mud and stone, just like in the log cabin. With its unique construction technique, the tavern’s upper walls are made with half timbers by use of the Germanic style together with brick nog and daub infill. According to statistics, half-timbered buildings in the United States are rare since they can only be traced in areas that German immigrants initially settled.

The roof to this historical museum is made from frames that fit in a Germanic design by using a truss that is commonly known as lived gender stuhl, which is a direct translation from “lying chair.” In this case, the chair means general support. In 1968 is when the Barnett Bobb Log House was moved to this area. According to research, the Golden Plough Tavern and Gen. Horatio Gates House are two historic buildings that connect, and they are located in York County. Before the buildings started operating as a museum, they were restored by the York County History Center between July 1961 to June 1964.

Joseph Chambers built the Gates house in 1751 and played a significant role in connecting the Golden Plough Tavern with the house through the kitchen. The gates house is a two-and-a-half-story building constructed from limestone and brick. The main architectural design used to build the house is the Georgian style. Gates house was home to General Horatio Gates, who lived there between 1727 and 1806.
