The Art Association of Indianapolis

The Art Association of Indianapolis founded the Indianapolis Museum of Art, an open membership spearheaded by May Wright Sewall, a suffragist. The association’s main aim was to inform the public about the importance of visual art and educate people about art. The first art exhibition was performed on November 7, 1883, and the main exhibits were four hundred and fifty-three artworks done by 137 artists. It was not until 1960 when the Art Association of Indy started thinking of a new location that could fit the museum.

This is when they agreed to transfer to the museum cultural campus. This decision was influenced by the University Circle located in Cleveland, Ohio, and through Herman Karannert, the board chairman. This was when the proposal to construct one Acropolitan Area was considered because it aimed to blend many institutions under a natural setting.

A New Era

By 2017, the museum announced a new era by making the public aware of the new branding movement that led to the renaming of the campus as Newfields. The initiative played a great role in renaming the gardens, IMA, Lilly House, and the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art. As mentioned earlier, Newfields is made up of various components and among them is the IMA (Indianapolis Museum of Art).

Thus, the IMA is considered the cornerstone of Newfields. Apart from housing the Museum’s collections, the building is equipped with a ticket office, a garden gift shop, the main entrance, and an incredible basement café. On the other hand, is the Lilly House. This amazing part of Newfields is also known as the Oldfields, which spans 26 acres. The museum’s department restored the house museum and historic estate in the early 1990s. The restored mansion of 2002, together with Oldfields, is now a unique example of the American Country Place Era estate that is still surviving.
