Lancaster County is one of 67 counties in the US state of Pennsylvania like York County. The county seat and largest city in the county are Lancaster. It was founded on May 10, 1729. The county has an area of 2,548 km², of which 103.6 km² is covered by water. Also, a population of 519,445 inhabitants, and a population density of 212.5 inhabitants / km² (according to the 2010 national census).

The county is famous for this tragic story. On October 2, 2006, Charles Carl Roberts IV entered a school in Nickel Mines. It is an Amish community located in the county, playing students (between six and fifteen years old), a teaching assistant, parents, and a hostage teacher, in a classroom. Roberts released three women with small children, a pregnant woman, and 15 students, all-male. Yet, the teacher managed to escape and contacted the police. Afterwards, Roberts remained barricaded in the classroom with 12 female students and the teacher’s assistant.

After the police arrived, Roberts shot the girls. And, shortly thereafter, he committed suicide. Three girls died, as well as the teaching assistant, and six girls were hospitalized, in a state. Geography and Culture of the County

The Mountains of the Region
